Tallahassee, FL (November 30, 2018) — Good news! In order to accommodate the challenging schedule posed on the Florida Panhandle due to Hurricane Michael, the Florida Commission on the Status of Women has extended the deadline for the 2019 Women’s History Essay Contest to December 22, 2018. It is the desire of the Commission for all Florida Middle School students to have the opportunity to participate.
The Florida Commission on the Status of Women is seeking entries for the 2019 Women’s History Essay Contest for students in grades 6–8. The Commission invites students to participate in order to gain a more relevant appreciation of women’s roles in history.
“Celebrating women’s history presents the opportunity to honor and recount stories of our female leaders’ talents, sacrifices, and commitments and inspires today’s generations,” says Essay Contest Chair Commissioner Elena Spottswood. “Learning about our past allows us to build our future. This essay is designed to inspire the future leaders of our state and to help them learn about women’s history.”
Students will write about an individual whose life of service has made a significant impact on them, just as Women’s Hall of Fame member Mary McLeod Bethune inspired generations to service. Essays must be written in paragraph format, be between 250 and 500 words, typed using 12 point font, and double-spaced, with margins set to at least one inch on all sides. Please select a legible font, such as Times New Roman.
Winning essayists will be awarded prizes and recognized at a special ceremony at the 6th Annual Women’s Legislative Education Summit to be held at the Capitol in Tallahassee in March 2019. All winners’ names will be released to the media and published on the Commission’s website. The deadline for entry is December 1, 2018, December 22, 2018.
